The Positive Impact Coloring Can Have On Our Mental Health and Mood
Let's be honest. Covid-19 has been the single most significant stressor of 21st century. With so many uncertainties looming in the distance, our mental health is being stretched to the max. But there is a simple and effective way to boost our mental well-being during this hectic time.
Research has proven that coloring for just 20 minutes a day can put our minds and bodies in a calmer, more relaxed state of mind. When coloring, signals are sent to our brain that it's ok to relax. The act of coloring is a meditative exercise, a tool that can help reduce anxiety and restore feelings of well-being by pulling our attention away from things that may be stressing us and towards a calmer mindful state. Once you begin, it's easy to get lost—zoning in on coloring and zoning out negative thoughts. Don't get discouraged with yourself if it does not come easy at first. Please don't force it or give up. Take breaks and enjoy the moment.
Take a few minutes and slow down. Breath. Take a tiny sliver of your day to focus and be present with You. Time is not the challenge, but the intent to DO is what we struggle with the most. How often have we all said, "I'll get to that in a bit," but that "bit" never comes. Instead, we let other people and things in our lives take precedents over our intent, and we soon lose sight of the thing that we know will help us in some way.
When coloring, there is no pressure or demand from you. Let your instincts decide what colors to use and what shapes to fill, allowing your mind and body to be still.
So take 20 minutes to honor yourself! Indulge in color and creativity. Clear your mind and permit yourself to let go, if just for a little while. You deserve it.
